Equipment

Would you climb Mount Everest without the proper gear? Of course not! Same goes for a juice fast – you need to make sure you have all the equipment necessary before you embark upon your cleanse. Here are the things you’ll need to get started:

  • Juicer or blender
  • Good cutting knife
  • Cutting board
  • Strainer or nut milk bag
  • Air-tight containers (a thermos or mason jars)

A point about juicers vs. blenders:

There are lots of people who will say that you need a juicer to properly fast. I say, PSHAW! If you want to use a blender, go ahead! If you do use a blender, however, you are going to want to make sure you are straining the juice fully so as to remove the fiber, so I would invest in a nut milk bag.

Groceries

I advise buying enough groceries to last you three to four days. One of the great things about using the 101 Juice Fast Recipes eBook is it clearly outlines how much produce is in each juice! Browse through the recipes, circle the ones you’d like to try, and make your grocery list based on the juices you will be drinking for the next few days. For a sample grocery list, click here!

Juice Prep & Cleanup

On your juice fast, it is typically suggested that you drink between 64-96 ounces (2-3 liters) of juice daily. That is between 2-3 quart/liter-sized mason jars of juice. For busy people like myself, I recommend making your juice ahead of time, sealing it in an airtight Thermos or mason jar, and keeping it cold in the refrigerator. This way, you always have juice on hand. Making your juice all at one time also helps with cutting down your cleanup time. Make sure that you are taking your juicer (or blender) apart and cleaning the pieces after each juicing session, to avoid bacteria and bad odors.

I tell ya; the key to successful juicing is drinking BEFORE you get hungry. It’s changed everything for me. I set an alarm on my phone, and I drink at least 16 oz (usually 20+) every 3 hours, and drink huge amounts of water in between (about a gallon a day). This is how you get through the days without cravings.

Length of Fast

Take the time to decide how long you are going to fast. If you are a beginner, you may want to shoot for a one to three-day fast to start. This will allow you to get used to the flow of juicing. Remember, this is for YOUR health and longevity, not a comparison with someone else to “beat” how long they can go without solid food. Shoot for a time frame that is most realistic for you and your life.

HOWEVER! (Here comes the big “BUT”!)

Remember the most important rule of juicing – LISTEN TO YOUR BODY. If you find that you are feeling weak or extraordinarily hungry, it may be a sign that your body is ready to break your fast and transition back to solid foods. Listen to your body and intuitively end your fast at a time that works for you. You may find that time is before or after the initial day that you had planned on completing it.

Timing

Give a lot of consideration to when you will begin your fast. A suggestion for those of you who work outside the home; you many want to consider beginning your fast on a Friday. Why a random Friday? Because the first few days of your fast may be a bit uncomfortable due to detox symptoms. You may want or need to spend Saturday and Sunday in the comfort of your own home.

Planning for Detox

Detox is a natural part of the cleansing process. Many people do not look forward to the headaches, the nausea, the fatigue, the coated tongue, the body odor…

I’m not making this sound like fun, am I? I know, I know, but it is a necessary event. Poisons (or in this case, toxins) sting twice – once on the way in and again on the way out. So, think of this as a good thing! The headaches are a sign that you are releasing the toxins from your body!

I sound way too happy about detox, don’t I?

You may not share my enthusiasm, but you should plan for it, nonetheless. Understand that you may feel less than perky the first few days, so make sure you are getting plenty of rest and drinking lots of water. You may also want to schedule enemas and/or colon hydrotherapy sessions. Both enemas and colonics introduce quarts or gallons of water into your system through the anus in order for you to “flush” the small and large intestines, which is where a lot of toxins will be stored. It may not be pleasant to think about, but it is a great way to help release the toxins from your system.

CONSTIPATION & BOOTY MAINTENANCE

I get the “Oh no! I’m not going NUMBER TWO enough while juicing, Carla!” panic call/post/message/email quite often. Constipation is actually quite common during a juice cleanse. Since you are drinking only liquids, there’s nothing heavy enough to push the fecal matter through your digestive tract. That’s why nothing’s hap’nin!
Even though it’s a common occurrence, you still have to take action to keep it movin’ down there. For me, it’s a 4-step process to conquer the stillness: natural laxatives, water (and LOTS of water), enemas, and colonics. 
 
I always recommend either a natural laxative (Cascara Sagrada, an herb that naturally irritates and moves the colon, comes in tea and pill form), a daily self enema, and/or a colonic at a reputable colon hydrotherapy clinic. Also, no matter how much juice you’re drinking (which should be no less than 64-96 ounces or 2-3 liters daily), you have to also drink 64-96 ounces or 2-3 liters of water. This will help flush your system out. 
 
Don’t neglect your colon through this. As you detox, harmful toxins can accumulate in your colon and cause major issues if you don’t eliminate properly. Make sure, on top of the water, you’re taking the extra step to get (and keep) yourself flushed out.

Breaking Your Fast

G.B. Shaw wrote, “Every fool can fast, but only the wise man knows how to break a fast.” Depending on the length of your fast, you should plan taking four to six days to transition back to solid foods. Track Your Progress

Even if you are doing a short fast, it is important to track the progress you are experiencing. During this process, it is not just about the numbers you see on the scale, but also about how your body is changing. I remember the day I realized I could finally, FINALLY breathe out of both nostrils! That was a huge moment that I achieved because of my fast (I had been plugged up for years!). So, make sure you are taking note of all the changes in your breathing, your thinking, your body movement, your clothing, your moods, and yes, even your weight.

  3. I have been drinking fruit/veggie smoothies and I was wondering if it is the fiber that is giving me a bloated feeling and all of the other side affects…ya, you know it…major gas! PLLLLL! Is this why you say to filter out the fiber with the nut bag? My gut tells me so, no pun intended, but I don’t have money to spend on the equipment like a juicer or high end blender. Do you think with eating raw foods and whole grains I’ll get enough fiber anyway? I have also incorporated more beans and grains and I think I must be sensitive to those. The smoothies never made me this bloated before. Thanks in advance for your answer!

    • Yes, this is why I suggest filtering out the fiber! And think about it… if you’ve got juices AND smoothies AND grains AND beans; that’s a whole lot of digestion going on! It sounds as if your body isn’t processing something all that well. Here’s what I suggest: back up and start from scratch. Start with just strained juice, then gradually add the other things you have been eating to see what is causing the most gas. When you’re adding all this stuff at one time, you cannot tell what’s truly causing the issue. Time to do a little detective work!

  4. Hi i juiced alot of vegetables at one time and put juice in mason jars and in fridge. I noticed that I had alot of thick stuff separated from the liquid is that fiber??? i may have use too many carrots at one time. It was a cleaning out:( LOL

    I’ve read that one should drink juice as soon as possible and that the longer it takes you to drink the juice, the fewer nutrients and enzymes are in the juice. I would love to make juices and store them in the fridge “in bulk” for each day.

    • Hey doll: as I cover in one of my videos, I am a fan of “bulk juicing”. Yeah, the nutrients aren’t AS peppy as they would be if you drank the juice right away. But are they totally gone? No way. Keep your juice in the fridge in an air-tight container like a mason jar), and drink it when you’re ready. I often juice enough for 2-3 days at a time.

  7. Hi Carla, I am on day 14 of my juice fast; I am finding it increasingly difficult to maintain the 64 oz of juice and the water. Seems like my stomach has shrunken to the size of an eyeball and I can only do a few sips of each throughout the day. Is my stomach supposed to shrink to so small a size that I can barely drink my required juices / waters??? HELLLLLLLP!

    • If all you can do is sip, then SIP! Your body adjusts to change so quickly that gulping no longer becomes an option. Crazy, isn’t it? For you, I would recommend drinking 8 oz cups throughout the day of both water and juice. That will help you get it all down and give your stomach the rest it is asking for.

  8. Hello Miss Carla!! Today is Day 1 of my very first juice fast! I Watched Fat Sick and Nearly Dead about a month ago and immediately wanted to begin juicing. I began research on juicing, blenders, ph balance, alkaline foods…ext. and in doing so came across your site! So far yours is my go-to site for all things Juice!! Today I made Summer Sunset (gotta love citrus), Simple Simon, and The Cool ’n You (love this one). It all came to about 84oz of juice all locked up air tight in my lovely Mason Jars. I’m so ready for this journey and can’t wait to see how different my body feels! As per your suggestion I’m only juicing for four days, and then after that I’ll reevaluate and decide whether or not to continue! I do have one question; should I add any water to the recipes for blending? Thank you Thank you Thank you Miss Carla…….you are amazing and inspiring! Until next time!

    • You are ALWAYS going to be hungrier on the first day of a fast. It’s normal. Is there a “maximum”? I think not. :) Drink until your heart’s (and stomach’s) content!

      • Great question, juicing together with healthy solid foods is a great plan. I’ve been doing for two weeks now and I feel great. I’m a competitive athlete and its difficult for me to be 100 percent juice.

    I’ve recently been interested to start juicing but I dont necessarily wanna go on a juice fast…would it be okay to have a solid healthy meal and drink the juice in between or would that be like breaking a fast and mess up anything?

    • That’s a fantastic, plan, hon. You don’t have to go whole hog when it comes to juicing. Even incorporating one or two juices into your meal plan will give you amazing benefits!

  11. Hi Carla! Thanks for sharing all of your great information! Quick question- do you water down your juices at all to stretch them? It takes a ton of veggies (and some fruits) to fill a 64 oz container….and that’s with an Omega juicer that leaves the pulp very dry! I’ve been stretching it by going 50/50 juice and seltzer water to avoid having to juice every day and grocery shop every 2 days! Your thoughts? Thanks!

      I love the idea, honestly. The point of my question is that you have to do what’s best for YOU, and if 2 juices and a meal is your bliss, rock on!

Ive seen the others do a whopping 60days mmmm even though Ive done complete fast before im not ready for 30 or 60days.     • It’s safe to do an enema daily, hon. You don’t have to – you can definitely space it out to every other day if you choose. Good to see you taking care of your booty!

    • Hello, hon! My recipes make between 16-32 ounces each, but that totally depends on the fruits and veggies you use, the size of your produce, whether they are in season (for example, citrus is juicier when in season which gives you more yield)…those kinds of factors. Go for it!

  15. I thank God for you. I was 155 when I got married, some way 180 creeped up on me and I became depressed, stressed, and self esteem buried 6ft under. I decided to workout (I worked hard Carla, Lord knows I did. I ate right and all). I was no longer depressed, stressed, and was digging up my self esteem…..THEN… Back to the DR. to find I only loss 5lbs in 1mth. I became the HULK. I said I’m Juicing as I began to remember all your videos and info + encouragement. I’m proud to say I have lost 2in off my waist ( dont know my weight yet, since I only check once a month) and I’m on my 7th day of juicing. I juiced mainly for the removal of waste and toxins (thinking this is why my weight loss was dragging) I never thought that I would be back in my old jeans, not having to give a single pair away ( 1 pair in particular I wore before I was married). You are truly amazing and its because of you I can hold my head high, and feel comfortable in my own body with a addition of sexiness. You ROCK Carla!

  16. Hi!! Im starting a 10 day juice fast and im a little confused, I follow the recipes but my juicer only produces about 10oz when im doing only veggies, should I add water to make it a least 16oz??

    • Mattie: yeah, green leafy veggies don’t produce a lot of yield, which is why I always recommend adding another high-yield fruit/veggie to add to it. For example, if you’re juicing kale, add cucumber, celery, apples, etc. to it to not only enhance the flavor, but to give you more juice! It just takes some time to work the recipes, hon. You can add water if you choose, but I never do (or need to!).

  17. Hey Carla!! SO glad I found you and your website- you’ve given me a firmer foundation to start my journey, thank you! I’ve been transitioning in to this over the past 2 weeks, but tomorrow is the beginning of FULL TIME juice! I’m extremely motivated and feeling like I should shoot for 30 days then go from there! However…within the next 30 days I need to air travel :/ (this was an unforeseen situation,otherwise would have planned around it) we all know with the regulations plus the “foods” offered, airports is less than cleanse friendly. Any tips? You or anyone? :) I’d like to find a way so I don’t have to push back my fast. Thanks again!!

    • Ah, traveling on a fast. Talk about a disrupter! I can suggest two courses of action: 1. You can FREEZE and ZIPLOCK your juices, and then pack and check a cooler in your suitcase. Make sure you add the stay-cold packs to the cooler, and then ask for a portable fridge in your room. OR, 2. You can make due temporarily with store-bought juices, like Naked or BoltHouse Farms. You can even buy enough for your trip in advance and pack those!

  18. HEY CARLA HELP! I HAVE BEEN ON THE FAST FOR 4 DAYS NOW AND I HAVE ONLY LOST 2 POUNDS IS THAT NORMAL AND DO I HAVE TO DO ENEMAS IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I CAN DO? PLEASE HELP I AM DRINKING 32

    • First of all, you’re not drinking enough juice. You need to be drinking at least 64 ounces for the nutrients your body needs. Also, STOP STRESSING ABOUT THE WEIGHT LOSS. Stay off the scale. Your body goes through SO many changes when juicing, and the scale is not a true indication of the weight you are releasing. Keep drinking, stop stressing, and the weight WILL come off.

Lots of take home ideas even for an experienced juicer like myself. Liked how you emphasized that not having a juicer is no excuse not to do it. You can strain your blender mix. I want to add that you can keep the pulp and use it for lots of stuff, such as soup mix or veggie burgers. Keep living and sharing your passion!

  20. Hey ma’am I was just wondering can I get an enema the night before starting my juice fast? And I know this is TMI but I have never done an enema before , but where can I buy one at? What is a good one? What is the steps in doin it?

    • I think enemas and colonics are great ideas before, after and during a fast. You should be able to get an enema kit at your local drug store, hon, and the directions will be in the box. You can also YouTube directions!

  21. Hi carla, i just bought a juicer and have been reading and researching like crazy! I just have a small problem -i am flight attendant and i am out of town, on an airplane and in hotels 2-3 days a week. I read that you suggested freezing juices for travel, but is it possible to buy a small juicer to take with me, and do you have any recommendations? Thank you so much!

    • Hey Meredith! I actually just got this question from another flight attendant recently. To say that y’all are on the go is an understatement!

      I would actually suggest SMOOTHIES instead of juices for your travel schedule. Reasons being: Frozen fruits and veggies can be obtained anywhere, the cleanup is SOOOOO much easier, you can buy a NutriBullet and transport that easier than a juicer, and they will probably keep you fuller longer.

  23. Hi Carla. I did a juice fast for about a week and then I stopped. After that, I ate regular foods for about another week and once I went to juice after that I threw it up. I am thinking it could have been one of two things. Maybe the food I put back in my system had toxins and the juice was trying to cleanse? or maybe the veggies weren’t fresh enough?? Do you have an idea of what could have caused this? it really upset my stomach. Thanks

    • It really depends on what you actually ate, Bianca, but I think you answered your own question. When people talk about going back to “regular food” after a fast, I always cringe. In order to protect yourself and your newly rested digestive tract, you HAVE to transition back into solid foods slowly. If you don’t, you can make yourself VERY ill.

    • Hello, Ed! Yes, juice “fasting” means that you would replace your daily solid food meals with juice, exclusively. The amount of calories you take in depends on the ingredients you use in your individual juices. As for fiber, the objective of a juice fast is to allow your digestive tract to rest and your body to cleanse by giving all fiber a rest for a specified period of time. This is not because fiber is “bad” – it’s just that your body will have a greater opportunity to heal without the distraction of having to break down the fiber you eat. You’ll gradually reintroduce fiber after your cleanse.

    • Nina: welcome to detox, my love! It’ll hit you like a freight train and threaten to derail you, but only if you let it. You have to make sure that you are getting enough water in addition to your juice in order to flush out the toxins. Also, this is the time you should be reaching out for inspiration; a quick way to do that is to watch a couple of documentaries that show you the end result so you know what you’re working towards. Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead, Hungry For Change, and May I Be Frank are at the top of my lists and my immediate go-tos when I’m feeling uninspired.

  26. Hi Carla, I started juicing about a week ago and I have a question about my approach. I juice for breakfast and lunch on thurs. thru monday and tues and wed I go off and just eat healthy foods. I’m not sure if I will juice all day to include it for dinner as well. Is my approach a good tactic?

    • I’m not sure, Robin… do YOU think it’s a good approach?

      Cleansing is such a personal journey. You do not need me (or anyone else, for that matter) to tell you how to do it. You have to decide what works best for you, and if this is the approach you like, go for it with gusto. If it doesn’t work, tweak it as necessary. There is no “right” or “wrong” with this. It’s YOUR journey, hon…you got this. :)

      • Thanks Carla! One more question. I am wondering whether I should still continue taking my daily multi-vitamin pill since I’m getting all of the vitamins from juicing. What donyou recommend?

      • Because of the variety of produce you’ll use, there’s no guarantee that you’ll get ALL the vitamins you’ll need while juicing. I am not a doctor and do not provide medical advice. I can tell you, however, that I kept a daily multi-vitamin regimen while juicing.

    • Yep, there’s a difference! When you embark on a juice cleanse (juicing), you are physically extracting the pulp/fiber from the fruits and veggies in order to just drink the juice. By doing this, you are getting the straight, unadulterated, easily assimilated nutrients into your system. The purpose of juicing (in addition to upping your fruit and veggie intake) is to give your digestive system a rest…which is why removing the pulp/fiber is important. No one is saying that the fiber isn’t a vital part of the produce: you’re just taking a short-term break in order to recharge and rebuild the system.

      Now, I happen to love BOTH juices and smoothies. If you want all the benefits of juicing PLUS the fiber, smoothies are for you. This is where equipment like the Ninja, the NutriBullet, the Vitamix etc. all come in. They pulverize the veggies and fruit completely so that you’re getting the fiber AND the juice combined, and the fiber will help your digestive system keep moving.

    • For beginner juicers, I always recommend the Breville Juice Fountain. Why? Because it produces juice quickly and is so darned easy to clean! As you get deeper into the art of juice, you may want to upgrade to something fancier; say, a masticating juicer.   27. Hi Carla, i downloaded your ebook “101 Juicing” first of all i love it, and second i watched “fat,sick, and nearly dead video by Joe Cross” and he is an inspiration. Carla, my sister so are you. Keep up the good work. I have a few questions? first can you get rid of the froth on top of the juice? second, can i continued to drink my green smoothies with protein in it? if i drink at least 64 fl. oz how much water am i to drink?
    My mother’s friend started juicing and she lost 17 pounds in two weeks time. I workout at the gym, plus i tried to stay away from processed foods. I make a lot of soups. I tried to cook with one ingredients. I do eat meat, but not as much now.

    • You’re so welcome, Hazelphine! To answer your questions: 1) Yes, you can get rid of the froth. It’s oxidized juice, and you do not have to drink it (although you can). 2) If you choose to add protein, that’s up to you, hon! 3) You need to drink at least 64 ounces of water in addition to the juice you drink daily.

  28. My husband and I decided to fast together. We watch fat, sick and nearly dead and got a revelation that we wanted to make a change. We are going to do 2 weeks. Today is the end of day 1 and I have a question. It is really hard for me to drink water without lemon. Can I continue to add lemon to my water while on the juice fast.

  31. I have been spending a lot of time researching on the vegan lifestyle and juicing vs blending. I concluded that I want to clean my system out by juicing and then transition to 80% raw vegan. This is a hard decision for me to make yet when I found your video on youtube I have spent the better part of today watching each video you made and I even purchased the combo ebook.     I was wondering is there a ratio between veggies and fruit when we fast?
    Like I have the nutribullet and I try to incorporate more veggies and and less fruit. (Not that much like a banana and 1 cup of berries)
    I just wonder cause I try to incorporate more veggies than fruit since veggies are harder for me to get in my diet.
    I would love to start off a 3 day juice fast but want to make sure I’m Doing it right

    • I don’t do “ratios”, hon. I’m an advocate for exploring the variety of tastes in the produce kingdom and experimenting with your juicer! It’s really hard to do juicing “wrong”. Someone else may tell you specific ways to do it, but other than drinking a MINIMUM of 64 ounces and drinking tons of water, I don’t have many rules.

    I’m really happy I came across your page! i was reading everywhere that in order to get the good stuff from juicing I needed a cold press juicer and I’m a college student, those things are really expensive! I’m relieved that I can use a blender and just buy a nut milk bag and mason jars. I do have one question, What size mason jar should I get? A half-pint, pint, or quart?

    • The size of the mason jar really depends on how much you like to drink. Not how much you’ll drink in a day, but how much YOU prefer to drink in one sitting. See, I’m a “gulper” and prefer to know that, by making 3 or 4 quart-size juices, I’ve filled my quota for the day. Some people have problems with drinking so much liquid, so smaller mason jars suit them better. As long as what you make adds up to AT LEAST 64 ounces per day, the size of the jar doesn’t matter.

    I tried to start a 3 day detox juice fast not too long ago. I was very motivated until I smelled the juice! It looked awesome but the taste was awful! I can’t get over the smell of beets ( I love pickled beets ) or celery and unfortunately those ingredients are in a lot of juices. Can I avoid those all together? They make me gag just smelling them and I can’t get the down :-(

    • Honey, you don’t have to use anything that you don’t want to. If you don’t like beets, don’t drink beets! Don’t be surprised, however, when your taste buds change over the course of a cleanse. I couldn’t STAND carrots at the start, and now I cannot get enough of them!

  36. Myself & four of my coworkers (all women) would like to juice for a week or two. After visiting a few website, I found yours to be the most informative. Would you mind developing a menu specifically designed for us? Our first goal is to first detox; each of us suffers from something (migraines, diabetes, endometrious) and our second is weight loss (we’d each like to lose 10 lbs).

    During this week long adventure, we are hoping to juice for breakfast & lunch, snack & have a light dinner. Could our menu consist of juices that are hearty for breakfast (we all start our day pretty early), like maybe throwing in some yogurt or nuts? Or does this defeat the purpose? We also know the throughout the day we would like a juice to drink for a snack if we begin to feel hungry or dizzy. Then their is dinner, I’m thinking lite, like boiled chicken & veggies, or a salad or soup. Does this sound okay, or will our bodies go into shock after not having food all day?

    • Honey, that’s a service that would cost money. Not something I would do for free. If this is what you need, you can always purchase the Juice28 program and use the menus from all 3 phases to create a custom plan that’ll work for you and your friends.

  38. Hello Carla: I’ve juice fasted twice once for 7 days and once for 9 days. I still have about 50 more pounds to lose (i’ve lost 80 pounds on traditional diets but have hit the wall and can’t seem to lose anymore. I have Crohn’s disease and my digestive tract does not work, I believe this inhibits my ability to metabolize food, it just sits there and rots. I feel great when I juice fast, no gas no bloating, no pain and I do lose weight. So I want to stay on longer this time. Just looking for support, I know my body is saying juice fast and let me rest for a long time but everyone thinks I’m crazy. Jamie

  39. Hi Carla and congrats on reaching 50 days of juicy deliciousness!
    I have a question about breaking the juice fast; I’ve since purchased your book on how to break the fast, and you mention that you would need about 1/3 the amount of total days of juicing in order to break the fast. So, since I juiced for 18 days, I wanted to break the fast in 7 days to be safe, but for each of the phases, how many days should I transition? Should I do 3 days on phase 1, 2 days on phase 2, etc? Thanks for clarifying for me.

  40. Thank you for this! It really explains alot. This is my first ever juicing experience and I have been juice fasting for 30 days. I wanted to go 35 days but my body is having rediculous cravings! I think it’s time to let it go for awhile, eat right and start the fast again after labor day. I feel happy with my decision now that I’ve read your blog. Thank you again

    I found your website through trying to find ways to best lose the weight that I have put on that I’m having a hard time losing due to fibroids my question to you is. How soon after stopping a fast can you start up again? Getting ready to start a 3 day fast here soon but i want to pick it up about a week later trying to make sure this is not to soon.

    • The key is going to be how you eat in between. You can go right back to juicing after eating…just know it becomes more difficult MENTALLY if you have a bunch of junk in the middle. Juicing is about giving your digestion a break while super-charging your nutrients…just honor the rest of your food plan during the periods that you give juicing a rest! Or, even better, begin to incorporate juicing into your DAILY meal plan so your body is used to it! Even one juice a day will make a vast difference.
